Tokyo stocks open lower as retail issues fall after earnings

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks opened lower Friday as some retail issues were sold after the release of disappointing earnings results the previous day.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 357.04 points, or 0.90 percent, from Thursday to 39,248.05. The broader Topix index was down 7.66 points, or 0.28 percent, at 2,728.26.
On the top-tier Prime Market, decliners were led by retail, pharmaceutical and bank issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 158.03-06 yen compared with 158.03-13 yen in New York and 158.18-20 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0295-0299 and 162.69-79 yen against $1.0294-0304 and 162.83-93 yen in New York and $1.0290-0292 and 162.77-81 yen in Tokyo late Thursday afternoon.
