Tokyo stocks open slightly lower as investors lock in recent gains

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks opened lower Thursday as investors locked in gains after recent advances, but losses were limited by buying following overnight rises on Wall Street.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 25.22 points, or 0.07 percent, from Wednesday to 36,754.44. The broader Topix index was down 11.19 points, or 0.42 percent, at 2,684.97.
On the top-tier Prime Market, decliners were led by marine transportation, insurance, and land transportation issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 143.85-87 yen compared with 143.75-85 yen in New York and 143.18-20 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The euro was quoted at $1.1303-1304 and 162.59-64 yen against $1.1297-1307 and 162.51-61 yen in New York and $1.1362-1364 and 162.69-73 yen in Tokyo late Wednesday afternoon.
