The Nikkei Stock Average falls 0.7% to 58326.59, tracking Wall Street's decline overnight. The main theme has been risk-off, Commerzbank Research analysts say in a research report.
Markets seem to be shifting focus from near-term corporate earnings to lingering worries over sustainability of artificial-intelligence-related spending and the broader AI outlook, the analysts add.
Among worst performers on Japan's benchmark index, Sumitomo Electric Industries falls 5.6%, Furukawa Electric drops 5.4%, and JX Advanced Metals is down 4.5%.
USD/JPY is at 155.94, compared with 156.01 around Tokyo market close on Thursday.
