(MT Newswires) -- Japanese shares closed higher Tuesday as investors returned from a holiday, with officials saying Tokyo has sought treatment on par with last year's bilateral trade agreement as the U.S. considers a new tariff regime that could otherwise impose higher duties on Japan.
The Nikkei 225 rose 0.87%, or 495.39 points, to close at 57,321.09.
After the U.S. Supreme Court struck down his tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, President Donald Trump imposed a 15% duty on imports from all countries under a separate law.
Trade minister Ryosei Akazawa said Japan sought terms as favourable as last year's trade deal after Trump's weekend move, warning that some exports now enjoying lower tariffs could face higher levies. Trump also said countries that step back from agreements with Washington could be subject to steeper duties under other trade laws.
Akazawa reaffirmed implementation of last July's deal in a call with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, while officials said they would review the court ruling's details.
On the corporate front, Hoya, which jumped over 5%, said a shareholder filed a derivative suit with the Tokyo District Court against seven current and former executives, alleging that 23.6 billion yen of a 30 billion yen treasury stock buyback in April 2016 exceeded distributable amounts under the Companies Act.
Innovacell Inc., which slumped 23%, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Growth Market and forecast a wider net loss for fiscal 2026 as it advances Phase III trials of ICEF 15. It expects revenue of 1 billion yen, an operating loss of 3.34 billion yen and a net loss of 3.46 billion yen.
Takara Holdings, which ended over 3% higher, is expanding sake and cocktail exports to South Korea as demand tied to Japanese cuisine grows, offsetting softer sales in China and the U.S., Nikkei reported. Exports of its Subaru boxed sake to South Korea more than tripled in the nine months through December.
