Hang Seng Index opens higher as Alibaba and MiniMax advance and Tencent remains steady

11th August 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong's stock market opened on a positive note as the Hang Seng Index gained 61 points, or 0.24 per cent, to reach 25,998 points. The China Enterprises Index rose 32 points, or 0.37 per cent, closing at 8,654, and the Technology Index climbed 13 points, or 0.27 per cent, ending at 4,932.
MINIMAX recorded a notable rise of over four per cent in early trading, marking one of the strongest openings among technology shares. Alibaba Group also performed strongly, advancing by 2.1 per cent, contributing to the upbeat tone. Meanwhile, Tencent Holdings remained largely stable, posting a slight decline of 0.04 per cent, while Meituan edged up by 0.1 per cent. Other major shares saw Xiaomi Corporation retreat by 0.8 per cent and JD.com decrease by 0.4 per cent, whilst Kuaishou added 0.1 per cent.
The trend was mixed among financial stocks, with HSBC Holdings up by 0.1 per cent and Ping An Insurance gaining 0.4 per cent. In contrast, AIA Group fell by 1.8 per cent, and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing saw a marginal increase of 0.2 per cent.
The session's early momentum was shaped by significant gains from MiniMax and Alibaba, which helped to balance the cautious trading in other sectors, particularly as technology shares drew investor attention at the start of the market day.
