Hang Seng Index falls as oil stocks gain due to U.S.-Iran tensions

23rd June 2025 - (Hong Kong) Hang Seng Index opened 194 points lower, or 0.82%, at 23,335 on Monday, as technology and financial stocks declined. The China Enterprises Index dropped 69 points, or 0.81%, to 8,457, while the Tech Index fell 55 points, or 1.07%, to 5,077.
Technology stocks showed significant weakness, with Tencent slipping 1.4%, Alibaba down 1.5%, Meituan losing 1.7%, Xiaomi edging down 0.1%, and Kuaishou declining 1.1%. Financial stocks also traded lower. HSBC Holdings fell 0.8%, AIA Group dropped 1.7%, Ping An Insurance slid 1.3%, and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing lost 0.8%.
In contrast, oil stocks outperformed the broader market, buoyed by rising crude prices following U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. CNOOC and PetroChina both climbed 1.6%, while Sinopec rose 0.7%.
