Wall Street stocks were treading water early Tuesday as markets kept watch on US-China trade talks before absorbing key economic data later in the week.
"The tone of the market is wait and see" as China and the United States enter their second day of negotiations, said Art Hogan, chief market strategist of B. Riley Wealth.
"The next catalyst will be what comes out of the US-China trade conversations going on in London," Hogan added after Monday's first round of talks passed without major announcements.
About 15 minutes into trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down less than 0.1 percent at 42,747.32.
The broad-based S&P 500 added 0.1 percent at 6,011.73, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index also edged up 0.1 percent to 19,608.59.
While this week's calendar is relatively light in terms of economic indicators, investors are looking ahead to Wednesday's release of consumer price index data, a key input to Federal Reserve monetary policy.
Among individual companies, Disney rose 0.7 percent after disclosing that it reached an agreement on the pricing of NBC Universal's 33 percent stake in Hulu, resolving a years-long appraisal process.
Disney will pay an additional $438.7 million for the stake. The transaction is expected to close on or before July 24.
