Wall Street stocks edged higher early Wednesday as markets welcomed a moderation in bond yields and oil prices, while digesting lackluster jobs data.
After Tuesday's surge, oil prices pulled back Wednesday, while yields on 10-year US Treasury bonds also retreated.
But barring a breakthrough on the Strait of Hormuz, "the oil prices will remain elevated and the rates market is going to track the energy market," said Art Hogan of B. Riley Wealth.
About 15 minutes into trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.4 percent at 52,988.69.
The broad-based S&P 500 added 0.1 percent at 7,640.99, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index held steady at 26,102.65.
Data from payroll firm ADP showed private-sector jobs growth in August was 38,000, down from the month before and well below the 47,000 predicted by economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires and The Wall Street Journal.
The figures are closely monitored ahead of official employment numbers due Friday, although the reports can diverge.
