Tokyo stocks opened lower on Wednesday after a mixed session for Wall Street, with traders waiting for corporate earnings season to get into full swing.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index fell 0.31 percent, or 83.47 points, to 27,215.72 at the open, while the broader Topix index slid 0.18 percent, or 3.49 points, to 1,969.43.

Among companies not reporting results, Google parent Alphabet lost two percent after the Justice Department announced an antitrust suit involving Google's ad business, asking that it be broken up to level the playing field for other companies.
"The Japanese market is expected to start lower today as the US market was mixed, making it difficult to find new buying opportunities," Monex senior market analyst Toshiyuki Kanayama said in a note.
