A Swedish member of parliament representing the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD), which is propping up the government, has resigned from his political posts following revelations he was being investigated for child porn, media reported Wednesday.
The revelation is viewed as a blow to the image of the party, which has long made the issue a political battle cry.
Swedish police were made aware of the alleged crimes via the US organisation National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), which sends tens of thousands of pieces of information to the police every year, according to public broadcaster SVT, which first reported on the case on Tuesday.
"The individual has been questioned and subsequently released but the suspicions remain and the investigation is ongoing," Lena Korner, the prosecutor leading the investigation, said in a statement.
Korner added that she could not comment further on the case or how long the investigation was expected to take.
Broadcaster TV4 reported that a "short video" had been uncovered, citing a source close to the investigation.
The MP has held several senior positions within SD and has been involved in issues relating to offences against children.
He travelled to Cambodia last autumn "to learn more about human trafficking", according to his request to parliament, newspaper Expressen noted.
He has resigned from his positions and left the party following these revelations, a party spokesperson confirmed to AFP.
SD has long campaigned for tougher sentences for sexual crimes committed against children and adolescents.
"These are embarrassing reports in every respect," the chair of the party's parliamentary group, Linda Lindberg, told reporters Tuesday.
"But it also shows once again that we are at the forefront on these issues concerning child and youth victims," she added, referring to the MP's swift resignation.
The lawyer of the former MP did not immediately respond when contacted by AFP.
