Hang Seng opens higher as tech and finance rally, oil stocks slip

7th May 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities advanced at the open on Thursday, led by heavyweight technology and financial names, while oil counters softened on weaker crude prices. Among large-cap tech movers, Kuaishou jumped 5.2%, Alibaba rose 3.9%, JD.com added 2.8%, Meituan climbed 2.4%, Tencent gained 1.9% and Xiaomi edged up 1.3%.
Financials underpinned the market: HSBC rose 0.9%, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing added 0.8%, AIA gained 0.8% and Ping An increased 0.5%.
Gold miners tracked firmer bullion. Zhaojin Mining rose 1.3%, Shandong Gold advanced 1.9%, Zijin Mining added 2.5% and Zijin Gold International surged 5.5%.
Energy shares lagged as crude eased, with CNOOC down 2.5% and PetroChina falling 3.4%. At the opening bell, the Hang Seng Index was up 317 points, or 1.21%, at 26,531. The China Enterprises Index added 114 points, or 1.29%, to 8,915, and the Tech Index gained 119 points, or 2.41%, to 5,089.
