Hang Seng Index opens sharply lower as AIA plunges and major financial shares fall in Hong Kong

6th August 2026 - (Hong Kong) The Hang Seng Index opened with a pronounced decline on the morning of 6th August, falling by 248 points or 0.96 per cent to 25,667 points at the opening bell. The China Enterprises Index followed suit, dropping 48 points or 0.56 per cent to stand at 8,555 points, while the Technology Index also slipped by 48 points or 0.99 per cent, registering at 4,884 points at the start of trading.
Large-cap technology shares displayed particular weakness in early trading. Tencent Holdings retreated by 0.2 per cent, Alibaba Group lost 1.2 per cent, Meituan dipped 0.1 per cent, and JD.com fell by 1.5 per cent, while Xiaomi's share price remained unchanged.
The financial sector came under notable pressure as well, with HSBC Holdings losing 1.5 per cent and Standard Chartered declining by 1.6 per cent. China Ping An was down by 0.3 per cent, and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited dropped by 1.2 per cent. Insurers were also not spared from the sell-off as AIA Group suffered a steep loss of 6.3 per cent, while Prudential dropped by 3.2 per cent during the early hours of trading.
