Hang Seng Index opens higher as chip stocks rally

5th May 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities began Tuesday's session on a firmer footing, with semiconductor shares leading early gains.
Chipmakers were among the strongest performers at the open. Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation ( SMIC ) advanced 4.1 per cent, while Hua Hong Semiconductor climbed 4.4 per cent, reflecting renewed investor appetite for the sector.
The benchmark Hang Seng Index rose 131 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 26,029 at the start of trading. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index added 55 points, or 0.63 per cent, to 8,786, while the Hang Seng Tech Index gained 42 points, or 0.85 per cent, to 4,971.
Major technology names were broadly steady. Alibaba increased 0.9 per cent, JD.com gained 0.7 per cent and Meituan edged up 0.4 per cent. Xiaomi rose 0.2 per cent, while Tencent slipped 0.3 per cent. Kuaishou traded flat. Financial counters also showed mixed but generally positive movement. HSBC Holdings advanced 0.4 per cent and China Ping An rose 0.7 per cent. Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing ticked up 0.1 per cent, whereas insurer AIA Group declined 0.7 per cent.
