The Australian sharemarket edged lower after traders shrugged off the White House saying it was open to a trade deal with China as cautious sentiment ensued.
The S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.1 per cent, or by 6.6 points to 7755.1 at the open. The All Ordinaries dipped 0.1 per cent.
US equities drifted in a rare quiet day between financial markets and all three equity indexes closing marginally lower.
